Mena lies in the southern part of Oromia, in the highland and mid-altitude country that stretches across south-central Ethiopia. On a map it appears as a modest town with a handful of main roads converging at its centre, lined with denser rows of buildings, and quieter residential lanes that loosen into farmland and scattered homesteads toward the edges.
As with many towns in the region, Mena acts as a meeting point for the surrounding rural area, where farming and livestock shape daily life. People come in from outlying villages to trade and for services, and the roads leading out of town connect it to neighbouring districts across a landscape of hills, valleys and seasonal streams.
