Mgandu lies in the Singida Region, in the broad interior of Tanzania where the land rises into a high, open plateau. From above, the town is a compact cluster of streets and plots in wide country, with farmland, scrub and seasonal watercourses spreading around it. It is the kind of place that a map shows clearly: a settled centre, a few roads leading out, and a great deal of space.
The street pattern is modest and practical. Roads meet at a handful of junctions, and around them sit houses, yards, markets and small fields. Further out, the lines thin into tracks that connect Mgandu to neighbouring villages and farms. Drawn in black and white, these few lines stand out sharply against the empty paper, much as the town stands out on the plateau.
