Middleton sits on the northern rim of Greater Manchester, where the city's continuous street pattern starts to loosen towards the foothills of the Pennines. From above, the town centre forms a compact knot of roads meeting near the River Irk. Around it spread rows of terraced housing, later estates and the long lines of arterial roads that run south towards Manchester and north towards Rochdale.
The town grew as a textile and market settlement. Its parish church of St Leonard stands on raised ground above the centre, one of the older buildings in the area. Middleton is also linked with Samuel Bamford, the nineteenth-century radical writer who was born here. On paper those layers show as a tight core, an outer ring of industrial-era streets and green gaps along the valley.
A Middleton map poster picks out the contrast between the fine grain of the terraces and the broad sweep of parkland and motorway at the town's southern edge. The river corridor runs through it as a soft break in the street pattern. The finished print shows a northern mill town with its surroundings still readable on every side.
