Mokopane, formerly known as Potgietersrus, lies in Limpopo Province on the main route north from Pretoria toward Polokwane. Its map shows an older town laid out in a regular grid, with newer suburbs and townships spreading around it and the land beyond opening into bushveld, farmland and low hills that rise westward toward the Waterberg.
The name recalls Mokopane, a nineteenth-century Ndebele leader. Nearby, the Makapan Valley caves are among the fossil hominid sites of South Africa listed by UNESCO, known for evidence of early human ancestors. The district is also known for platinum mining along the northern limb of the Bushveld Complex.
