Monchegorsk Map Poster & Print
Monchegorsk lies on the Kola Peninsula, well north of the Arctic Circle, on the shore of Lake Imandra and surrounded by smaller lakes and low tundra mountains. The town was founded in the 1930s alongside a nickel and copper plant. Its map combines a carefully planned centre with a landscape that, in many directions, is more water than land.
The name comes from the Sami word for beautiful, and the setting explains why. A broad main avenue forms the spine of the centre, lined with Stalin-era and later apartment blocks. Beyond the residential districts lie the smelter complex and the hills of the Monchetundra, and the Lapland Nature Reserve is not far to the west.
