Via Sacra
The pilgrim path leaves the town and climbs the hill in a series of turns, passing small chapels on the way to the summit church. It draws a fine line against open ground.

关于地图
Monte Santo Map Poster & Print
Monte Santo lies in the dry backlands, the sertão, of northeastern Bahia. The town takes its name from the hill that rises beside it. In the eighteenth century, the Capuchin friar Apolônio de Todi laid out a Via Sacra there, a stone path with small chapels marking the Stations of the Cross, climbing to a church at the top.
The path is still a pilgrimage route, especially during Holy Week. On a map it is the most striking feature: a thin line zigzagging up the slope away from the town's streets, while the settlement itself is a compact grid gathered below at the foot of the hill.
The town also has a place in Brazilian history. It served as a base for government forces during the Canudos War in the 1890s, and the Bendegó meteorite was found in the surrounding municipality in 1784. A Monte Santo map poster shows a small town and its sacred hill, side by side.

Town at the foot
Monte Santo's streets form a compact grid gathered below the hill, the densest part of the map and the starting point of the pilgrimage.
Sertão landscape
Around the town, scattered roads and tracks cross dry open country, leaving plenty of empty space around the settlement on the poster.

一张有意义的地图
For pilgrims who have climbed the hill, and for families from the sertão of Bahia, this map records a place of both faith and home. The line of the Via Sacra gives it a meaning few town maps carry.
