Morondava lies on the flat western coast of Madagascar, where the Morondava River reaches the Mozambique Channel. From above the town is a long, narrow strip of streets between the sea and a network of channels and mangroves. The beach and the estuary together shape the whole outline of the settlement.
The shoreline here has been moving for decades as the sea erodes the coast, and parts of the seafront have been protected or rebuilt. Inland, a short drive away, the Avenue of the Baobabs lines a dirt road with tall, slender trees. It is one of the most photographed places on the island.
A Morondava map poster places the town's small grid against the open sea on one side and the branching channels of the delta on the other. In monochrome the contrast between straight streets and meandering water is striking. It makes a fitting reminder of a coastline known for its sunsets and for the baobabs just beyond the town.
