Müllheim lies in the south-west corner of Germany, in Baden-Württemberg's Markgräflerland, between the western slopes of the Black Forest and the Upper Rhine plain. The French border along the Rhine is only a short distance to the west, and Freiburg and Basel are both within easy reach by rail.
On the map, the town's older centre sits where the land begins to rise, with streets following a stream valley up into the hills. Vineyards cover the surrounding slopes in fine, regular rows, while to the west the flatter land opens out toward the motorway, the railway and the Rhine beyond.
