Murcia lies in the broad valley of the Segura River in southeastern Spain, and the river crosses the city in a series of curves, separating the historic centre on the north bank from the El Carmen district to the south. Beyond the built area, the map dissolves into the huerta, a patchwork of orchards, villages and irrigation channels.
The huerta gives Murcia its particular look from above. A network of acequias, many with medieval roots, divides the flat land into small fields and threads between scattered hamlets, so the city blends into its surroundings rather than ending sharply. To the south, the bare ridges of the Sierra de Carrascoy rise abruptly from the valley floor.
The city was founded in 825 under the Umayyad emir Abd al-Rahman II, and its cathedral, with a baroque facade and tall bell tower, stands near the river. The Monteagudo hill, with its castle and statue of Christ, rises from the plain to the north. A Murcia map poster traces the Segura bends, the old streets and the ordered fields of the huerta.
