Nebaj Map Poster & Print
Nebaj lies in the Quiché department of Guatemala, high in the Cuchumatanes mountains. It is the largest town of the Ixil region, which it forms together with Chajul and Cotzal. The town occupies a valley floor surrounded by steep, green hills, and on a map the landscape is striking. A compact grid sits in the middle, and winding roads and footpaths climb the slopes around it.
The centre follows the Spanish colonial model, with a central plaza and a large church framed by straight streets in regular blocks. Further out the grid breaks down, and houses spread along roads following the terrain. A Nebaj map poster shows both layers, the planned core and the organic edges, set against the mountains that isolate the region.
Nebaj is the heart of Ixil Maya culture. Ixil is spoken here, and the women's woven clothing, with its distinctive red huipiles and headdresses, is known across Guatemala. The surrounding highlands are farmed in small plots and crossed by trails that link scattered villages. In black and white, the town's clear centre and the fine lines around it capture this remote, mountainous place.
