Nek’emtē lies in the highlands of western Oromia and is the main town of East Welega. From above, its streets follow the land rather than a grid, curving over ridges and dipping into valleys. The main road from Addis Ababa enters from the east and continues west towards the Sudan border region.
The surrounding area is a fertile, green upland with coffee and mixed farming. The town has long served as a regional centre for trade and administration in Welega. It is also home to a regional museum dedicated to the history and culture of the area.
A Nek’emtē map poster shows a town shaped by its terrain. Main roads trace the ridges, smaller lanes branch into the slopes, and the edges of the built area fade into farmland. In black and white, the pattern looks organic and flowing, very different from the grids of lowland cities.

Western highway
The road from Addis Ababa runs through the town and on westward. It is the clearest single line on the poster and links the town to the rest of the country.
Highland edges
At the outskirts, streets thin out into paths and scattered homesteads. This gives the map soft, irregular borders against the surrounding farmland.
