Patmos Map Poster & Print
Patmos is one of the northern Dodecanese islands in the eastern Aegean, small enough to cross by car in minutes. Its outline is unusually complicated for its size. Deep bays bite into it from both sides, leaving three hilly sections connected by narrow necks of land. The coastline zigzags so much that it looks far longer than the island is wide.
The port of Skala sits at the narrowest point, where ferries arrive in a sheltered bay. On the hilltop above, the white village of Chora wraps around the fortified Monastery of Saint John the Theologian, founded in the eleventh century. Its lanes are tight and irregular, forming a dense knot of streets on an island otherwise marked by a few quiet roads.
Halfway up the hill is the Cave of the Apocalypse, where tradition holds that John wrote the Book of Revelation. The monastery, the cave and the historic centre of Chora are listed together as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A fortress-like monastery crowns the hill above Skala, and the village of Chora is packed around its walls. From above, it forms a tight cluster of alleys unlike anything else on the island.
