Piranhas Map Poster & Print
Piranhas lies in the sertão of Alagoas on the northern bank of the São Francisco River, close to the border with Sergipe. On a map the historic centre follows the curve of the river, with short, steep streets climbing the hillside above it. Newer districts spread across higher ground away from the water.
The old town, with its colourful nineteenth-century houses and old railway station, is protected as national heritage. Piranhas is also linked to the story of Lampião and his band of cangaceiros, killed in 1938 on the opposite bank. Nearby is the Xingó dam, whose reservoir fills the canyon upstream.
