Polonuevo is a municipality in the Colombian department of Atlántico, a short distance south-west of Barranquilla. The land here is low and warm and lies on the Caribbean coastal plain. From above, the town is a small, orderly grid of blocks, with roads leading off to neighbouring municipalities and rural areas beyond.
The grid follows the Spanish colonial model found across the region, with a central plaza surrounded by regular blocks. Around it, pasture and farmland spread out, crossed by small streams and dotted with ponds and marshy areas that fill during the rainy season.
