Ruqi lies in the Awdal region in the far north-west of Somalia, an area of dry uplands, seasonal watercourses and scattered settlements that extends toward the border with Ethiopia. On a map the town appears as a cluster of streets and compounds set in open land, its shape determined more by roads, terrain and access to water than by any formal plan.
Published detail about Ruqi is limited, so it is best described by what the map itself shows: a built-up area where lanes converge on a few main routes, and a wide landscape around it crossed by tracks leading to neighbouring towns.
