Town on a spur
The old core sits on high ground above the gorge, so its streets bend and branch irregularly instead of forming a regular grid, and they stop sharply where the land falls away.

关于地图
Ṟuwandiz Map Poster & Print
Ruwandiz, also written Rawanduz, sits in the mountains of the Erbil Governorate in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. From above, the town looks less like a grid and more like a settlement fitted onto a ledge. Streets follow the shape of the rock, and the built-up area thins quickly wherever the slopes steepen.
The land around the town is cut by deep gorges. The Rawanduz canyon and the nearby Gali Ali Beg gorge are among the best-known landscapes in northern Iraq, and the road through them, begun by the engineer Archibald Hamilton around 1928, is still called the Hamilton Road. On a map it shows up as a thin, persistent line that bends with the river below.
A Ṟuwandiz map poster works as a study in constraint. Terrain drives every line, so the finished print has a clear structure: dense, irregular blocks on the high ground, and drop-offs where the canyon cuts through. The long road threading away into the mountains gives the composition direction.

The Hamilton Road
Built through the gorges from the late 1920s, the road runs as a single winding line that follows the valley floor and links the town to the wider region.
Canyon walls
The deep river cuts around the town leave empty bands on the map, and those gaps set off the built-up area as clearly as any coastline would.

为什么选Ṟuwandiz
一张有意义的地图
People who know Ruwandiz tend to remember the drop into the canyon and the drive along the gorge. A print of the town's streets holds that sense of place in plain lines, whether you have family ties to Soran, fond memories of a journey through the mountains, or simply an interest in how towns adapt to hard ground.
You can personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, so it could carry a family name, a travel date or the Kurdish spelling of the town. Choose from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Paper and Sand suit the mountain setting especially well.
