Semender Map Poster & Print
Semender is a settlement within the urban district of Makhachkala, the capital of Dagestan, lying a short distance west of the city centre. From above it reads as a dense pattern of mostly low-rise housing arranged in long, fairly regular streets. It is the kind of self-built neighbourhood that has grown steadily around Makhachkala in recent decades.
The terrain around the settlement shifts from the flat coastal lowland near the Caspian Sea to the first rising ground of the foothills inland. On a map this gives Semender a clear edge on one side, where streets give way to open, uneven land, while on the other it merges into the wider road network leading into the city.
The name recalls Samandar, an early medieval Khazar city thought to have stood somewhere on the Caspian coast of Dagestan. A Semender map poster turns the modern settlement into a clean graphic, a tightly ruled grid of streets set between the city, the plain and the hills.
