Shalqar Map Poster & Print
Shalqar lies in the Aktobe Region of western Kazakhstan, in arid steppe and semi-desert that stretches far in every direction. The town grew along the railway line that crosses this region, and it remains a small, compact settlement where the tracks, the station area and a regular grid of low streets make up nearly everything drawn on the map.
A lake of the same name lies close to the town, a broad body of water in otherwise dry country, and its outline gives the map its main natural shape. Around the town the land is open and sparsely marked, with only a few roads and tracks leading away across the plain toward distant settlements.
A Shalqar map poster is an exercise in contrast. A small orderly grid and a straight railway sit beside a wide lake and an empty landscape, and the emptiness is part of the picture. In monochrome the result is spare and quietly striking, a portrait of a steppe town defined by the line that brought it into being.
