Shertallai, also written Cherthala, lies in Alappuzha district on the narrow coastal strip between the Arabian Sea and Vembanad Lake. The map is full of water: the straight sea coast to the west, the broad lake to the east and canals and backwater channels running between them.
The land is flat and low, and roads mostly follow the long north–south axis of the strip, with smaller lanes branching off toward the water. The National Highway runs through the town, linking it with Alappuzha to the south and Kochi to the north.
The area has long been known for its coir industry, which uses coconut fibre from the palms that cover the countryside. A Shertallai map poster captures an unusual setting, a town suspended between sea and lake, where water appears on every side of the composition.
