Shively sits just southwest of Louisville, and on a map it reads as part of the larger city's fabric rather than a separate town. Residential streets form short, regular blocks, and Dixie Highway runs through them at an angle, the main commercial spine of the area. Rail corridors and larger industrial parcels mark the edges, where the fine street grain gives way to broad, empty-looking rectangles.
The city's name is tied to Kentucky bourbon. The Stitzel-Weller distillery, one of the best-known names in American whiskey history, stands in Shively, and the area's distilling past shows up on the map as large lots and warehouse footprints among the houses. It is a working landscape, and the linework keeps that plain and honest.
