Sighișoara is one of the best-preserved fortified towns in Europe, founded by Transylvanian Saxons and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its historic citadel occupies a hill above the Târnava Mare River, enclosed by walls and towers, many of which were once maintained by the town's craft guilds.
From above, the citadel forms a compact oval of lanes, with the Clock Tower at its gateway and the Church on the Hill at the summit, reached by the covered Scholars' Stairs. Below, the lower town spreads along the river in a looser pattern of streets and bridges.
A Sighișoara map poster shows this unusual two-level structure clearly. The town is also known as the reputed birthplace of Vlad III, the prince whose name later inspired Dracula, a story that has brought many visitors to its streets.
