Slavonski Brod stretches along the northern bank of the Sava, directly across the water from the Bosnian town of Brod. On the map the river forms a strong southern border. The town spreads north across the flat Slavonian plain toward the low Dilj hills. The Zagreb–Belgrade railway and motorway run east to west, adding long parallel lines above the streets.
Its best-known landmark is Brod Fortress, an eighteenth-century Habsburg stronghold on the old military frontier. Its angular bastions still stand out clearly from above. The town is also linked to Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić, the children's author who lived and wrote here. It has a long industrial tradition as well, centred on the Đuro Đaković works.
