Spanish Lake Map Poster & Print
Spanish Lake is an unincorporated community at the northern edge of St. Louis County, Missouri, near where the Missouri River flows into the Mississippi. On the map its suburban streets, with their curves and cul-de-sacs, stop suddenly at a large area of bottomland. There, river channels, sloughs and farm fields replace the housing grid.
The community takes its name from a lake from the late eighteenth century, when the region was under Spanish rule. The land next to it is mostly public ground: Fort Belle Fontaine Park, on the site of an early US military post above the Missouri, and the Columbia Bottom Conservation Area at the confluence itself. Both appear on the map as wide open space bordered by water.
