St Albans stands on rising ground in Hertfordshire, north of London. On a map, the medieval centre sits on the hilltop, where streets meet near the cathedral and the old market. Below it to the southwest, the River Ver runs through Verulamium Park. That green open space covers much of the site of the Roman town. Victorian and later suburbs spread outward in every direction.
The city takes its name from Alban, traditionally honoured as the first British Christian martyr. The cathedral on the hill has one of the longest naves in England. Verulamium was one of the major towns of Roman Britain. Parts of its wall, a theatre and mosaic floors survive near the park. The city's past is layered unusually clearly across its map.

Surrounding streets fill out the rest. It is a compact English city with more history per square kilometre than most.
