Tondalam lies in the hills of western Tamil Nadu, close to the border with Kerala. The terrain here is uneven, and on a map the settlement does not follow a grid. Instead, roads and paths curve along the contours of the slopes, and houses gather along them in loose, irregular groups.
This is a landscape of hills, forests and plantations, where the land shapes nearly every line on the map. Streams run down the valleys between the slopes, and roads wind between neighbouring villages and towns. The built-up area is spread out rather than concentrated, which gives the place a softer, more scattered look from above.
