Vänersborg sits at the southern end of Lake Vänern, the largest lake in Sweden, where the Göta älv river leaves the lake and flows south toward Gothenburg. From above, the town lies between two waters: the lake bay of Vassbotten and the start of the river.
After a major fire in 1834, the centre was rebuilt in a regular grid, and the map still shows these straight blocks at the heart of the town. Around them, newer neighbourhoods spread along the shores and up the gentle slopes.
To the east rise the flat-topped mountains of Halleberg and Hunneberg, known for their forests and moose. A Vänersborg map poster brings together the lake, river, grid centre and these distinctive plateaus into a balanced and calm composition.
