Vellalūr lies on the south-eastern outskirts of Coimbatore in western Tamil Nadu, where the city's growth meets older villages and farmland. On a map, it is a mix of irregular village lanes and newer, more regular residential layouts. Main roads link it to central Coimbatore and to towns further south and east.
Water is a key part of the picture. A large irrigation tank near the town, part of the Noyyal river's system of tanks and channels, appears as a broad pale shape among the streets and fields. On a Vellalūr map poster, the tank and its channels add soft curves to an otherwise angular pattern of plots and roads.
The area has a notable place in Indian archaeology. Several hoards of Roman coins have been found at Vellalūr, evidence of trade between the Roman world and southern India. Today the town is increasingly part of greater Coimbatore, and its map shows that meeting of village and city.
