Xanxerê sits on the rolling highlands of western Santa Catarina, a region of farms, grain fields and scattered woodland. From above, the town centre shows a regular grid of blocks that softens into curving streets as it meets the rises and dips of the terrain. Small streams and patches of green thread through the urban area, and beyond it the countryside breaks into large agricultural plots.
The economy of the region rests heavily on agriculture and agro-industry, and the town serves as a service hub for the surrounding rural municipalities. Highways link Xanxerê to Chapecó and other centres of the Oeste Catarinense, running across the planalto as long, gently curving lines.
