Yangambi Map Poster & Print
Yangambi lies on the Congo River downstream from Kisangani in Tshopo province. From above, the wide river dominates the view, its channels and islands spreading across the southern part of the map, while the town and its roads sit on the northern bank at the edge of an immense rainforest.
The town grew around an agricultural research station founded in the colonial era, which became one of the leading tropical research centres in Africa. Old experimental plots and plantation blocks still show as regular grids among the forest. The surrounding forest is protected as a UNESCO biosphere reserve.
