Aalten is in the Achterhoek, the eastern corner of Gelderland, only a few kilometres from the German border. On a map it is compact and rounded. A small historic centre is surrounded by later residential neighbourhoods, and all around it lies a patchwork of fields, hedgerows and farmsteads. Country lanes spread out in every direction, giving the town a star-shaped outline against the open land.
The municipality also includes Bredevoort, a small fortified town known in the Netherlands as a book town, with many second-hand bookshops. The landscape between the two is typical of the Achterhoek: small-scale and green, with narrow roads and wooded plots. It looks very different from the long straight polders of the western Netherlands.
