Desert margin
Past the town's edge the map becomes almost empty. Only a few straight roads cross the sand toward neighbouring oases, and the town looks like a single dense block.

Kaarta
Adrar is a regional capital in the Algerian Sahara, and from above it looks like an island. A compact, largely orthogonal town sits in wide desert with no strong landforms around it. Streets are laid out in straight lines, main roads leave the centre in several directions, and beyond the last blocks there is almost nothing on the map.
The town is the centre of the Touat, a chain of oases known for foggaras. These are underground channels that carry water from the water table to the palm gardens by gravity alone, a system maintained over centuries. Around the modern town, the palm groves and older earthen ksour appear as irregular, finely divided patches.
An Adrar map poster makes the contrast between the planned town and the older oasis landscape visible. The regular grid of the present-day centre sits next to the winding lanes of the ksour and the scattered plots of palm gardens. The emptiness around them gives the composition a lot of breathing room.
Past the town's edge the map becomes almost empty. Only a few straight roads cross the sand toward neighbouring oases, and the town looks like a single dense block.
Palm groves and cultivated plots around the settlement form small, irregular patterns. They are shaped by old irrigation channels, not by the modern street grid.
The core of the town uses straight streets and wide main roads. On paper its order stands out clearly against the free forms of the surrounding ksour.

For people from the Touat, or anyone who has crossed the Algerian Sahara, the map shows what a town looks like when it is surrounded by space. The composition is spare and graphic.
