‘Afak Map Poster
‘Afak is a town in Al-Qadisiyah Governorate in central Iraq, on the low, level land between the Tigris and the Euphrates. From above, the landscape is mostly geometry. Straight canals and drainage ditches divide the ground into long rectangles of farmland, and the town sits among them as a denser knot of streets.
The area has a very long past. The ruins of Nippur, one of the most important religious centres of ancient Sumer, lie close to ‘Afak, and archaeologists have excavated there for more than a century. The modern town and the ancient mound share a plain that people have been irrigating for thousands of years.
