Akron grew on high ground in north-east Ohio, at the highest point along the Ohio and Erie Canal, and its name comes from the Greek word for summit. The canal route still runs through downtown, and the Little Cuyahoga and Cuyahoga rivers cut valleys across the northern side of the city. On a map these watercourses break an otherwise regular American street grid.
Downtown sits on a compact grid, surrounded by former industrial zones, rail corridors and neighbourhoods of wooden houses. Highways loop around and through the centre, while the Cuyahoga River gorge and the green corridor of Cuyahoga Valley National Park lie just to the north, softening the edge of the map with parks and wooded valleys.
In the twentieth century Akron was home to Goodyear, Firestone, Goodrich and General Tire, and was known as the rubber capital of the world. It also hosts the All-American Soap Box Derby.
