Al Qawāsim is a town in the Jabal al Gharbi district of northwestern Libya, in the upland area often called the Nafusa Mountains. This escarpment rises above the coastal plain of Tripolitania, and towns here were traditionally built on ridges and plateau edges, with farmland and olive groves on the surrounding slopes.
From above, the settlement follows the shape of the terrain. Roads run along high ground and descend into valleys in long curves, and buildings gather along those routes rather than filling a neat grid. Between settlements, the land opens into dry country marked by wadis and tracks.
