Kaarta
Alandi lies on the banks of the Indrayani river, a short distance north of Pune in Maharashtra. From above, the old town is a tight knot of lanes gathered on the riverbank, with ghats stepping down to the water and a bridge carrying traffic across. Newer housing and institutions spread outward along the roads toward Pune and the surrounding plateau.
The town is one of the most important pilgrimage places in Maharashtra because it holds the samadhi of Sant Dnyaneshwar, the thirteenth-century poet-saint who wrote the Dnyaneshwari. Each year the palkhi procession of the Ashadhi wari sets out from Alandi toward Pandharpur, and large numbers of devotees, the varkaris, gather here before the walk begins.
An Alandi map poster reveals how the river organises the town. The Indrayani bends through the frame, the ghats and temple precinct sit at the heart of the old streets, and the roads leading south toward Pune stand out clearly. It is a small place on paper, but one with a strong, readable centre.
The river curves past the old town, lined with ghats where pilgrims bathe; on the map it forms a flowing band that anchors the whole layout.
The samadhi temple of Sant Dnyaneshwar stands at the centre of the old town, surrounded by narrow lanes that draw inward from every direction.
A main route runs south to Pune, carrying traffic and pilgrims alike and giving the map a clear line connecting the town to the city.
