Alcalá de Henares stands on the north bank of the Henares River, some thirty kilometres east of Madrid. From above, the old town forms a tight oval of narrow streets and walled blocks, threaded by the long, straight Calle Mayor. Around it spread twentieth-century neighbourhoods, industrial estates and rail lines, while the river curves along the southern edge beneath low hills.
The city was the Roman town of Complutum and later home to the university founded by Cardinal Cisneros in 1499, whose historic precinct is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Miguel de Cervantes was born here in 1547, and the Calle Mayor, with its long rows of porticoes, is one of the longest arcaded streets in Spain.
