Altena lies in the Sauerland region of North Rhine-Westphalia, in the deep, winding valley of the Lenne. From above, the town has almost no room to spread: streets and houses fill the valley floor and climb short side valleys, while steep, wooded hills rise on every side. The river, the road and the railway run side by side through the narrow gap.
Burg Altena stands on a ridge above the town. In 1914 the world's first permanent youth hostel opened within the castle, founded by the teacher Richard Schirrmann. Altena was long a centre of wire drawing, an industry that depended on the water power of the valley. A lift through the hill now carries visitors from the town up to the castle.
