Anastácio sits on the Aquidauana River in Mato Grosso do Sul, directly opposite the city of Aquidauana, to which it is linked by bridges. The two towns form a single urban area split by the water, and on a map the river runs between them as a winding band, with Anastácio's grid of streets laid out on the western bank.
This is the threshold of the Pantanal, the vast wetland that stretches west toward Bolivia and Paraguay, and the country beyond town becomes flatter and more open, crossed by roads and ranch tracks.
