Aného lies on the coast of Togo, close to the border with Benin. From above, the town sits on a narrow strip of land between the Atlantic surf of the Gulf of Guinea and a lagoon behind it. The streets stretch along this strip, a bridge crosses the water, and the shape of the town comes from the shoreline and the lagoon edge.
Aného is one of Togo's oldest towns and was an early centre of the colonial administration before the capital moved to Lomé. It is the home of the Guin people and hosts the Epe Ekpe festival, a yearly traditional ceremony that draws visitors from across the region. Colonial-era buildings and churches still stand in parts of the town.
