Ann sits on the inland side of Rakhine State, away from the coast, in country dominated by the forested ridges of the Arakan Mountains. From above, the town is a small cluster of streets set in a valley, with the surrounding land folded into ridges and river channels that determine where anything can be built.
The town has long mattered as a crossing point. The road through Ann climbs over the mountains to link Rakhine with the Irrawaddy basin, and on a map it appears as a winding line leaving town and twisting through the hills. It is one of the few overland routes across this part of the range.
An Ann map poster is necessarily a quiet one. There is no dense grid or long waterfront, only a compact settlement, a few main streets and the roads that lead out through difficult terrain.
