Arari is a town in the state of Maranhão, in northeastern Brazil, on the banks of the Mearim River as it nears the sea. It belongs to the Baixada Maranhense, a low, flat region of lakes, floodplains and seasonal wetlands. From above, the town's small grid of streets sits beside the broad, curving river, with open land spreading out on every side.
The Mearim is known for the pororoca, a tidal bore that at certain times of year pushes a wave upstream against the current, and Arari is one of the places where you can see it. The landscape changes with the seasons. Rains flood the lowlands, and when the water recedes it leaves a mosaic of lakes and grassland.
