The twin squares
The Grand'Place and the Place des Héros form two open rectangles in the middle of the town. Their continuous arcades make them some of the most recognisable town squares in northern France.

Arras reads clearly from above. At its heart sit two large squares, the Grand'Place and the smaller Place des Héros, joined by a short passage and framed by rows of narrow Flemish-Baroque gabled houses. Around them the medieval lanes curve inward, held in by a loop of boulevards that follows the line of the old fortifications. The pattern is dense and compact.
To the southwest, Vauban's citadel appears as a clean star-shaped outline of bastions and ditches. It is one of the fortifications listed together by UNESCO, and the town's belfry is part of another UNESCO listing of belfries in Belgium and France. The small river Scarpe runs along the northern edge. Beyond it, rail lines and later districts spread out into the flat farmland of Artois.
Below the streets there is a second town: chalk quarries and cellars known as the boves. During the First World War they were extended into tunnels that sheltered thousands of soldiers. None of this shows on a map, but the order of the streets above it does. Vauban's citadel
A five-pointed star of bastions and moats southwest of the centre. From above it looks drawn with a ruler, which makes it one of the most graphic shapes on the sheet.
Boulevard ring
Wide boulevards trace the route of the demolished ramparts. They wrap the historic core in a clear loop that separates the old town from the later districts outside.
