Assis lies in the western interior of São Paulo state, on the gently rolling plateau that stretches toward the Paraná River. Its map is typical of towns that grew along the railway in the early twentieth century. The centre is a tidy grid of square blocks near the old line, and newer neighbourhoods spread out in similar patterns in all directions.
The town serves as a regional centre for the surrounding agricultural area, where sugarcane, grain and pasture dominate. It is also home to a campus of UNESP, the São Paulo State University, which brings students from across the country. Beyond the edges of the grid, the land opens into large fields and small patches of woodland.
