Atbara stands where the Atbara River joins the Nile in northern Sudan, the last major tributary the Nile receives before reaching the Mediterranean. From above, the two rivers meet at a sharp angle, with a narrow belt of green along their banks and open desert beyond.
The city grew around the railway. Atbara has long been the headquarters of Sudan Railways, and its workshops, yards and tracks take up a large part of the map. The railway workers here also made the town a centre of Sudan's early trade union movement, and it still has a reputation as a working city.
