Auch is the capital of the Gers department in Occitanie and the historic heart of Gascony. The old town occupies a hill on the west bank of the Gers river. From above, its streets climb and twist toward the summit, where the Cathedral of Sainte-Marie stands. Across the river, the lower town spreads over flatter ground in a more regular pattern.
The monumental staircase runs between the upper town and the river, a long flight of steps linking the two levels. A statue of d'Artagnan, the Gascon musketeer, stands along the way. Narrow stepped passages called pousterles also drop down the slope. On a map these create a dense, fine-grained texture on the hillside that contrasts with the looser streets below.
