Ayabe lies in the north of Kyoto Prefecture, in the hilly Tanba region, far from the tourist crowds of Kyoto city. The Yura River flows through the town, and the built-up area spreads along the valley floor on both banks. Forested hills close in on every side, so the map has a clear, contained shape.
The town has an unusual history. Gunze, the well-known Japanese textile company, was founded here in 1896 to develop silk production. Ayabe is also the headquarters of Oomoto, a religious movement founded in the town at the end of the nineteenth century. Both left traces in the town's layout, with large compounds among the ordinary streets.
