Az Zubayr lies a short distance south-west of Basra, where the irrigated land near the Shatt al-Arab gives way to open desert. It grew near the site of early Islamic Basra and is named after Zubayr ibn al-Awwam, a companion of the Prophet whose tomb and mosque stand in the town. On a map, the old centre is a close, irregular web of lanes around that shrine.
Beyond the historic core, newer neighbourhoods are laid out in larger rectangular blocks along wide roads. The built-up area extends toward Basra, and the two are increasingly joined. For centuries the town was a stop on caravan routes between southern Iraq and the Arabian Peninsula. Today it is better known for the large oil field that bears its name.
