Badr Ḩunayn lies in the Medina Region of western Saudi Arabia, in a broad valley between dry mountain ranges and the Red Sea coastal plain. It is best known as the site of the Battle of Badr in 624 CE, one of the defining events of early Islamic history. On a map, the modern town appears as a spread of low blocks set down in a wide, pale landscape.
Most of the street pattern is recent. It is laid out in straight lines and large parcels, typical of Saudi towns that expanded in the late twentieth century.
