Kaarta
Banjul occupies St Mary's Island, a low, flat island where the Gambia River opens into the Atlantic. The map shows a small city almost entirely surrounded by water: the wide estuary to the north and east, the ocean to the west, and to the south a band of mangrove creeks. One of them, Oyster Creek, separates the island from the mainland.
The old centre is laid out as a tidy colonial grid of straight streets near the riverfront, with the port and the ferry terminal on the estuary side. The main road leaves the city through Arch 22, a large ceremonial gateway, and crosses Oyster Creek toward Serekunda and Bakau on the coast, where most of the urban population now lives.
The British founded the city in 1816 as Bathurst, and it was renamed Banjul in 1973. Ferries cross the broad river mouth to Barra on the north bank. A Banjul map poster shows the city as few people see it: a small, orderly grid on an island where a great river meets the sea.
Straight streets meet at right angles across the flat island, forming a small, regular pattern that makes the old centre instantly recognisable.
The monumental gateway stands on the main approach road into the city, a fixed point where the route from the mainland enters the grid.
South of the city, Oyster Creek and the surrounding mangroves form a band of winding channels, crossed by the road link to the mainland.

Macah Banjul
For Gambians abroad and for visitors who have spent time on the coast, Banjul is the symbolic heart of the country, even though much of the population has moved outward. A map of the island capital is a concise, graphic reminder of it.
Personalise the title and subtitle with a name, a date or a short message, and adjust the coordinates line. Choose among five styles, try a free 900 px preview, then buy HD files in six sizes or order a printed poster, framed if you like.
