Kaarta
Batī lies in the Amhara region of Ethiopia, on the eastern escarpment where the highlands begin their long descent toward the Afar lowlands. On a map the town sits on uneven ground, with streets bending to follow the slopes and a main road winding in from the highlands and continuing down toward the plains to the east.
The town is best known for its weekly Monday market, one of the largest in the region, where Afar, Oromo and Amhara traders meet to exchange livestock, grain and goods. The market grounds and the roads leading into them are an important part of the town's structure, as people and animals arrive from both the highlands and the lowlands.
A Batī map poster captures a place defined by its position between two landscapes. The compact core, the curving road and the surrounding open ground combine into a simple but evocative composition. In black and white the map becomes a portrait of a crossroads, where the shape of the land explains why the town exists at all.
Batī's large weekly market draws traders from the highlands and the Afar lowlands, and it is the event the town is most widely known for.
The main road winds through town as it descends from the highlands, a curving line that reflects the steep terrain of the eastern escarpment.
Around the town, open ground stretches toward both the cooler highlands and the drier plains, giving the map a strong sense of place.
